1. Emergency Procedures
Steps to Take in ALL Emergency Situations:
- Remain CALM!
- Contact the Facilities/Plant Operations Manager at 337.521.8901 or 337.521.8914 or the Administrative Staff: 337.521.8896 in Lafayette, 337.373.0185 in New Iberia or 337.413.8146 in Franklin
- Give your name
- Indicate if the call is for a medical or psychological crisis, and/or criminal activity
- Give the nature of situation - including whether weapons are present
- Give your present location
- Give the name(s) of the person(s) in crisis
- Remain with the person in crisis
- Do not move the victim
- Give a description of the individual(s) involved in the suspicious/criminal activity
- A Security Officer is dispatched to investigate the incident, make a report, and follow through. Other departments are contacted as needed.
- Documentation and follow-up shall be accomplished by the Facilities/Plant Operations Manager or other appropriate divisions.

Emergency Transportation and Messages
TRANSPORTATION
NOTICE:
- SLCC employees are prohibited from providing transportation to anyone in crisis.
- The cost for the use of ambulance transportation is borne by the individual.
- Individuals refusing ambulance transportation are responsible for their own transportation to a medical facility, i.e., friend, family member. They also must assume responsibility
for any consequences resulting from their decision to refuse ambulance transport.
Emergency Messages
- Any emergency calls/messages for students, faculty, or staff should be directed to 337.521.8896 in Lafayette, 337.373.0185 in New Iberia, or 337.413.8146 in Franklin.
- Messages deemed an emergency will be documented and delivered as quickly as possible.
Criteria for emergency messages:
- Death in family
- Illness in family
- Vital information related to personal welfare/safety
- Messages that are considered non emergency ARE NOT personally delivered but will be documented and placed in college mailboxes.

3. Biological/Chemical Procedures
BIOLOGICAL/CHEMICAL PROCEDURES
In the event of a biological/chemical emergency the following procedures should be followed:
If you believe a biological/chemical incident has occurred:
- Stay CALM.
- IN CLASS: The instructor along with all students will evacuate the immediate area.
- Call the Facilities/Plant Operations Manager 337.521.8901 or the Administrative Staff: 337.521.8896 Lafavette. 337.373.0185 New Iberia. or 337.413.8146 Franklin.
- Information to note when calling:
- location of incident (building, first/second or third floor, room number, etc.)
- nature of the incident
- your name (faculty, staff or student) and contact number
- Close the door, keep others away.
- Do not pull the Fire Alarm evacuation system.
- Follow the directions provided by the Security Officer or the Safety Team Member.

4. Hurricane/Tornadoe Procedures
Hurricane/Tornado Procedures
SLCC Hurricane/Tornado Watch/Warning Procedures:
HURRICANE/TORNADO WATCH
Definition: Weather conditions that can result in the dismissal of classes and the closure of the college.
The Facilities/Plant Operations Manager monitors impending destructive weather conditions with the National Weather Service, local weather stations,
bulletins issued by the Lafayette City - Parish Office of Homeland Security and the Louisiana Office of Emergency Preparedness. Once it is determined that dangerous conditions
exist, the Facilities/Plant Operations Manager will notify campus administrators. Employees are asked to move to a state of readiness and prepare to secure records and property.
HURRICANE/TORNADO WARNING
Definition: A hurricane or the sighting of a tornado is reported or indicated by radar.
- The Facilities/Plant Operations Manager notifies the college chancellor or her designee. The decision to evacuate can only be made by the chancellor, her designee.
- In the event of an order to "shelter in place," all personnel must proceed away from windows and go to the center of the building.
- Remain "sheltered in place" until directed by the Security Officers or Safety Team members to leave this area.
- Certain circumstances may necessitate evacuation rather than "shelter in place".
- Security Officers and designated Safety Team members will evacuate all persons in campus buildings.
- The Facilities/Plant Operations Manager or designated staff secures all buildings.

5. Bomb Threat Procedures
Bomb Threat Procedures
In the event a bomb threat is received by telephone, the following procedures shall be followed:
- An employee who receives a bomb threat should remain CALM and be prepared to take notes.
- Write down the number displayed on the caller ID display of your telephone.
- The employee should ask what TIME the bomb is scheduled to explode, attempt to obtain the LOCATION of the bomb and, if possible, ask the caller what is the REASON for the threat.
- Attempt to identify background noises that may help to determine the location where the call is being made, such as traffic, music, laughter, etc.
- Make an educated guess, and try to determine some critical information about the caller such as SEX, AGE, RACE, VOICE or ACCENT, or determine whether the caller is using a disguised voice.
- The employee should immediately notify the Facilities/Plant Operations Manager at 337.521.8901 or the administrative staff: 337.521.8896 in Lafayette, 337.373.0185 in New Iberia, or 337.413.8146 in Franklin.
- Do not pull the fire alarm, and do not use any type of telephone or electronic communication device in the affected area of the building.
- The decision to evacuate a building during a bomb threat is made by the Chancellor; or in the absence of the Chancellor, the designated highest ranking administrator.
- Instructors and students will immediately evacuate areas. Class groups are asked to stay together and report to the marshalling point for roll call.
Building Evacuation:
- Lafayette Building - evacuate to the last oak tree toward Bertrand Drive.
- New Iberia Building - evacuate across the street by the mailbox.
- Franklin Building - evacuate to Parish Library across the street
- Safety Team Members check the building to make sure the building has been cleared of occupants.

6.Fire Procedures
If you hear the alarm, smell smoke, or observe a fire:
- Stay CALM!
- Utilize the Emergency Procedures/Guidelines and evacuation maps (section 7) posted throughout the building.
- IN CLASS: The instructor will send one person to pull the nearest fire alarm and ask a second person to verbally report the fire by calling the Facilities/Plant
Operations Manager at 337.521.8901 or to the administrative staff: 337.521.8896 in Lafayette, 337.373.0185 in New Iberia, or 337.413.8146 in Franklin.
OUTSIDE CLASSROOMS: Anyone can pull the fire alarm and call the emergency contact numbers above.
- Remember to note when calling -
- location of fire (building, first, second or third floor, room number, etc.)
- status of fire alarm
- your name. (faculty, staff or student) and your contact number
- The Facilities/Plant Operations Manager is responsible for initiating calls to the fire department.
- Staff, instructors and students will immediately evacuate areas. Faculty are to exit with roll books. Class groups are asked to stay together and report to the
marshalling point for roll call.
- DO NOT use elevators. Use Stairways ONLY!
- DO NOT attempt to enter smoke filled or "hot" rooms.
- There are NO EXCEPTIONS to an order to evacuate.
- Instructors are responsible for assisting mobility impaired and non-ambulatory individuals as their classes exit. Instructors need to assign three people to assist with the procedure.
- Two people are assigned to accompany any immobile individuals to the nearest stairway and stay with that individual until a Security Officer or a Fire Department Official arrives.
- A third person will notify the Facilities/Plant Operations Manager at 337.521.8901 or administrative staff at 337.521.8896 of the location of any individual who is physically
impaired and unable to move without assistance.
- Instructors are responsible for arranging to evacuate any visual and hearing impaired individuals or persons using crutches, canes, walkers, etc., from the building.
LAFAYETTE NOTE:
Do not attempt to move any individual from a wheelchair or carry a wheelchair with an individual in the chair down the stairways unless it is absolutely necessary for the
safety of the individual. Wheelchair stair descent devices are located at the stairwells nearest the elevators for this purpose.
!! Do Not enter the building
until an “all clear” notification has been issued by the fire department and
relayed by an SLLC staff or faculty member !!

7.Building/Campus Evacuation Maps
PROCEDURES: Emergency/Critical Incident Evacuation
When a decision to evacuate is made by the SLCC Chancellor:
- Stay CALM!
- The Facilities/Plant Operations Manager or designees have the primary responsibility for evacuating buildings and/or campus.
- If there is a need to evacuate the campus, the Facilities/Plant Operations Manager or designees will coordinate and direct traffic.
- If assistance is required, the Facilities/Plant Operations Manager will contact the outside agency that is needed.
- Security Officers and Safety Team Members are responsible for giving instructions that will help safely evacuate all persons from any or all campus buildings.
Evacuation routes are shown on the attached building maps. Please note that an incident location may require an alternate route.
- Should building occupants be told to "shelter in place," all personnel must proceed to the center of the building. All personnel are to remain sheltered until they are directed by Security
Officers or Safety Team members that it is safe to leave. In some cases, "shelter in place" may mean sheltering within campus offices or classrooms, as is necessary.
- During the time that college personnel are sheltered, the building HVAC systems are shut "off" and all windows and doors closed. The Facilities/Plant Operations Manager or designee is responsible
for performing these duties.
